Making room for grief: Compassion after pregnancy and infant loss

For some families, October carries a grief that others may never see. A due date that arrives without a baby. A nursery left quiet. Memories of a child held for too little time, or a pregnancy that ended before those memories could begin.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge these losses, honor the children families remember, and offer compassion to those carrying grief.

At Life Choices Yakima, we believe that caring for the whole person includes making room for sorrow. Every person who has experienced pregnancy or infant loss deserves to be heard, treated with dignity, and supported without pressure to grieve a certain way.

Every loss deserves compassion

The depth of someone’s grief cannot be measured by how far along a pregnancy was or how long a baby lived. The hopes, connection, and love surrounding that child matter.

Some people want to talk about their experience. Others need quiet, privacy, or time before they can find the words. Partners and family members may also carry grief, sometimes expressing it differently from one another.

There is no single way to mourn. A person may feel sadness, anger, numbness, confusion, or several emotions at once. Moments of joy can exist alongside sorrow. Neither means that the loss has been forgotten.

Compassion begins when we allow people to tell us what they need instead of deciding for them.

Support begins with listening

A trauma-informed approach recognizes that a loss may affect a person’s sense of safety and trust. Support should give people choices, respect their boundaries, and allow them to share at their own pace.

That can mean asking permission before discussing a loss, explaining what to expect during a conversation, or accepting that someone does not want to share their story. No one should have to revisit painful details to prove that their grief deserves care.

For friends and family, helpful support often begins with simple words:

“I’m so sorry.”

“I’m here to listen.”

“You don’t have to talk, but you don’t have to be alone.”

Statements such as “You can try again” or “Everything happens for a reason” may be intended as comfort, but they can leave someone feeling that their loss has been minimized. We do not need an explanation or a solution to be present with someone in pain.

Practical care matters, too. Bringing a meal, helping with everyday responsibilities, or checking in weeks and months later can communicate that a family has not been forgotten. Offering specific help can make it easier for someone to respond.

Healing does not require forgetting

Healing does not mean leaving a child’s memory behind or reaching a point when the loss no longer matters. It may mean finding room for that memory while continuing to live, connect, and experience hope.

Some families find comfort in speaking their child’s name, writing a letter, planting flowers, or creating a meaningful keepsake. Others prefer to remember privately. Each family deserves the freedom to choose what feels right for them.

For those who draw strength from faith, prayer and spiritual community may offer comfort. That support can include room for difficult questions, tears, and silence.

You deserve care

If you have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, you do not have to make your grief smaller to make others comfortable. Your experience matters. Your child matters. You deserve compassion wherever you are in your journey.

This October, Life Choices Yakima invites our community to listen gently, honor each family’s experience, and remember that support is needed long after the first expression of sympathy.
